Weekend Project

Did you ever look at your Tv & surround set up and think it was hideous? If the answer is yes, this DIY project is just right for you! Lately my husband and I have been on an organizing kick. Now that we own a home it's a good time to get rid of the eyesore that is our Tv set up and have something a bit more permanent and modern. Have a look at the old set up.

Talk about hideous! All those cords laying about...

So time for a change. We liked the clean lines look with functionality so we decided on floating shelves. The worry about floating shelves however is that if too much weight is applied they will sag and eventually fall. The steps are few but very important when creating a media floating shelf. We found and marked out the studs on the wall. Then built our frame to anchor to the studs, using 2X4s. We built the frame dimensions keeping in mind the weight of the wood itself. Of course you want it wide enough to hold the media set up but not too wide for fear of too much weight. From the wall to the face of the shelf is 12 & 7/8" and 37" corner to end

We used a knotty pine to face the shelves, staining them first.

Because the Tv will now be smack dab in the corner, we thought the best way to do this would be to anchor it to wood bolted into the studs as well. The wood is angled as to sit against the walls flush.

Load it up and Voila!

Most of the work for this project is in the math, measuring the width of your stereo system and making sure the Tv mounting bracket is in the right spot to fit your size Tv.

All in all very easy to do :)
